Wavves – Loser Year (Woodsist) Wavves CD
Wavves’ eponymous first studio album. The man behind it, Nathan Williams, has a penchant for cassette releases although luckily for us has also started to embrace the digital age.
These Are Powers – Life Of Birds (Dead Oceans) All Aboard Future CD
Blank Dog – Spinning (Woodsist) The Fields LP
And another cracking one:
Muslims – Nightlife (1928) Muslims LP
Kid Congo And The Pink Monkey Birds – - I Found a Peanut (In The Red) Vampire Boots CD
“The songwriting of Kid Congo Powers…has the freshest white take on the blues of its time’, so says Jack White presumably relinquishing the ‘fresh’ crown himself. Either that or conveniently forgetting he’s wearing it for the purpose of a soundbite.
Wavves – Side Yr On (Woodsist) Wavves CD
These Are Powers – Parallel Shores (Dead Oceans) All Aboard Future CD
Fever Ray – If I Had a Heart (Rabid) 7
Elegi – Varde (Miasmah) Varde CD
“Varde tells the story of the pioneer polar explorers who risked their lives to go to some of the most hostile places on earth, to ‘triumph’, over the elements. The music explores the feelings those brave men must have felt, as they went into the unknown, well aware that they might never see their families again. Ice cold winds and blizzards, creaking ice, stormy waters, constant hunger, isolation, disease and death, provide the basis for the music, depicting the immensity and scale of these great white landscapes.” Yes. Couldn’t have put it better myself.
Elegi – Skrugard (Miasmah) Varde CD
Mordant Music – The Hauntalogical Song (Mordant) 10
This is rather fine. Apparently Hauntology is “a philosophy of history suggesting that the present only exists with respect to the past, and that society at the end of history will begin to orient itself towards aesthetics and ideas that are thought of as rustic, bizarre or “old-timey”; that is, towards the “ghost” of the past.” I think we’ve all learnt something today.
O – Atomit (BBE) Various – The Grandfather Paradox CD
Stillupsteypa & BJNilsen – Man From Deep River Part 2 ( Editions Mego) Man From Deep River CD
Alexander Tucker – Old. Phantom Rings (ATP/R) Custom Made 2×7
Blue Roses – Doubtful Comforts (Salvia/XL) 7
Pierre Bastien – The American of the Highway (Western Vinyl) Visions of Doing CD
And another offering from Maestro Bastien:
