In our world we have U2, Coldplay and 50 Cent to enchant us, we like global sentiments, easy to understand lyrics and power chords to draw out our deep emotions. This suits most people. So, for the intelligent and literate people among us, there are bands like the Decemberists, lyrically dense and rich, with enormously elaborate orchestrations that can explode like baroque fireworks. For those who would prefer something a little more stripped down, there’s also a series of live recordings of solo performances by hugely talented front man Colin Meloy from which you can expect sparkling between song banter, campfire sing alongs, surprising cover versions and what he considers to be the worst song he ever wrote. He wasn’t wrong.
