Robert Burns, or Robbie Burns to the Scottish is 250 years old this Burns Night, (25th Jan 2009). Who is this Rabbi you may be asking, well, he was the poet and lyricist who famously reminded the world that the best plans of mice and men often go astray and of course Eddie Izzard is that man who asked the question, what plans do mice have exactly?
Well along with the rest of us they’re probably planning on singing Auld Lang Syne this New Year which is of course Burns’ most famous creation, but there are plenty of other equally incomparable pieces to be found in his sizable oeuvre. As you might expect a man celebrating his 250th birthday might need a little help giving voice to his music and so this is where our helpful singer songwriter Eddi Reader steps in.
Eddi Reader has known the songs of Robert Burns since she was a child, but has recently found herself emersed in a much deeper relationship with the man, as she found comfort in his words after the loss of her father. The resulting emotional complexity involved when Eddi approaches a performance of Burns obviously makes for a highly compelling listen. Rough Trade are thrilled to offer you all such a fascinatingly emotional, just in time for Burns night.
