God Help The Girl - OUT TODAY! 22/06/09 in God Help The Girl
God Help The Girl is finally released today (22nd June). The album features 13 songs from the pen of Stuart Murdoch and one by Stevie Jackson, sung by an array of predominantly female voices and played by assorted members of Belle and Sebastian and an orchestra.
It is available in a deluxe hardback sleeve, a standard jewel case CD, gatefold vinyl and download. It is available from all major retailers – and can be purchased online from HMV, Amazon, Rough Trade and digitally from iTunes and other digital retailers.
Copies can also be found at www.belleandsebastianshop.com where a limited number of copies come with a free tote bag. And finally – there are still subscription copies available, which guarantees not just a copy of the album, but associated singles and the forthcoming ‘Stills’ EP and downloadable video content. Details can be found at www.godhelpthegirl.com/subscription.
Don’t just take our word for it though – here’s what some of the first batch of reviews have to say:
‘the crucial presence is the Murdoch discovery, Catherine Ireton. The wondrous warmth of her voice could make her the Dusty Springfield to Amy Winehouse’s Dinah Washington’ – Word
‘an expansive, eclectic set of classic pop . . .further confirms Murdoch as one of the finest songwriters of his era’ – Record Collector
‘fans of chamber pop, Motown, the Lovin’ Spoonful and the Mamas and Papas will find much to cherish’ – Mojo
‘a precious antidote to an overdose of earnest, bearded Men in Rock these past few years’ – Plan B
‘almost all the 14 songs punch above their weight, resulting in that rare thing: an album where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.’ – Evening Standard
‘the tunes are uniformly fantastic and the arrangements are charming’ – The Guardian
‘the elements that make Belle and Sebastian so precious are here in Murdoch’s storytelling panache and encapsulation of outsiderdom’ – Attitude
‘if Murdoch’s early work evoked Felt working on a Bill Forsyth movie, God Help The Girl is something like The Zombies scoring Hal Hartley.’ – Uncut
We hope you like it too!
PS – if you are in the UK, you can still hear the 3 song session from last week on the Marc Riley show on 6 Music here.
