Rough Trade Books To Release ‘Let’s Start A Pussy Riot’ At Meltdown 2013 29 May 2013 in Books

On 14th June at this year’s Meltdown festival, curated by Yoko Ono, Rough Trade will launch the book ‘Let’s Start A Pussy Riot’. The book will be available to buy from the Royal Festival Hall bookshop during Meltdown (14th-23rd June) followed by an initial release via indie record shops and on the Rough Trade website from 24th June. All profits will go to the Pussy Riot cause.

The book has been created in collaboration with members of Pussy Riot and links together the events leading up to and after the group’s arrest and the themes that these courageous women fight for – feminism, LGBTQ rights, freedom of speech and environmental activism. Contributors include Judy Chicago, Jón Gnarr, Antony Hegarty, Bianca Casady, Sarah Lucas, Bobby Conn, Robyn, Kim Gordon, Lucky Dragons, Billy Childish, Jeffrey Lewis and many more.

Pussy Riot undoubtedly ushered in a new era of feminism and political freedom with their protest acts. The dialogue so explosively ignited by Nadya, Masha and Katya continues in ‘Let’s Start A Pussy Riot’. Also heavily influenced by last years Antony Hegarty-curated Meltdown festival, the book includes an exploration of the concept of Future Feminism, asking how we can move forward and unite...

We are excited to announce that The Royal Opera House will present the first London performances of Antony and The Johnsons: Swanlights with the Britten Sinfonia on 25 and 26 July 2013.

Tickets (£25-£100) are on sale now from the box office: 020 7304 4000 or online at

This extraordinary performance piece was originally commissioned by New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and was presented at Radio City Music Hall in January 2012 to great acclaim; later in 2012 Swanlights enjoyed huge success at the 2012 Melbourne Festival.

Swanlights is an evolution of Antony and The Johnsons: The Crying Light, presented at the Manchester Opera House for the 2009 Manchester International Festival featuring songs from all four of Antony and the Johnsons’ albums – self-titled, The Crying Light, Swanlights and Mercury Prize winning I am a Bird Now.

This performance includes the Britten Sinfonia, with orchestra arrangements by Nico Muhly, Rob Moose and Maxim Moston. Envisioned as a meditation on light, nature, and femininity, Swanlights is produced in collaboration with light artist Chris Levine, lighting designer Paul Normandale, set designer Carl Robertshaw and lighting director Emma Westerberg.

        Of the performance, Antony says:
