Parquet Courts Announce RSD Single 'Sunbathing Animal' (19th April), UK/European Tour + SXSW Shows 4 March 2014 in parquetcourts
It is with much excitement that Parquet Courts announce the release of a new single on Rough Trade – “Sunbathing Animal,” which is the A-side to the Record Store Day 7” and b-side “Pilgrims To Nowhere,” another new song. Now, much in the spirit of Parquet Courts, this single is somewhat “DIY.” It’s DIY in the respect that you have to be able to read sheet music in order to play it yourself. So, maybe “PIY?” Anyway, dig it.

The group’s 25-year-old founder and front woman Mica Levi was classically trained at the Purcell School, after which she won a scholarship to study composition at the Guildhall School of Music. During her time at the latter she released her first mixtape ‘Filthy Friends’ with producers and MC’s including Toddla T, Ghostpoet and Man Like Me. In 2009 she slow-rhymed on Speech Debelle’s track ‘Better Days’ and produced songs on Del’s debut album ‘GOB’. It was at Guildhall that she met ‘the Shapes’ Raisa Khan and Marc Pell and, largely on a laptop in Mica’s bedroom, they made their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Jewellery’ (2009). Since then, in addition to creating ‘NEVER’ the group have been extremely prolific: Last year using unorthodox, handmade instruments they collaborated with The London Sinfonietta – one of the world’s leading contemporary orchestras – to release the album ‘Chopped & Screwed’, recorded live in front of an audience at King’s Place. Earlier this year Micachu and DJ/producer Kwes then released the second volume of their collaborative mixtape series ‘Kwesachu’ which featured artists such as Ghostpoet, Speech Debelle and Dels (volume one was released in 2009 and featured The xx, Hot Chip and Metronomy). Micachu is currently an artist in residence at London’s Southbank Centre, the youngest individual musician to have ever been granted this unique role.
